Fayetteville, ranked third and the highest ranked team that played in what was officially week one, rolled to a 45-31 win over defending Oklahoma state champion, Owasso. Darius Bowers threw for 393 yards and touchdowns of 73 and 76 yards to Bo Stuckey, who snared five passes for 177 yards. Bowers also ran for three touchdowns.
Fourth-ranked Bentonville fell at No. 10 Conway, 24-21, after trailing 21-3 with 5:13 left in the third quarter. Jovoni Johnson completed the rally with a 5-yard touchdown run with 1:09 remaining. Johnson also threw a touchdown pass. Cary McClain ran for 159 yards and a touchdown.
Fifth-ranked Greenwood, the defending Class 6A state champion, dropped its season opener at No. 6 Fort Smith Northside, 31-16. Northside broke away from a 7-7 tie behind Derrick Wise, who threw for a touchdown and ran for a score.
Pine Bluff, ranked seventh, fell at Cabot, 35-14. Cabot ran for 377 yards in the win behind T.J. Rogers, who ran for 149 yards and a touchdown, and Graham Turner, who galloped for 117 yards and two touchdowns.
Bentonville West, ranked No. 8, lost its inaugural game at its new home stadium, 44-31, to Fort Smith Southside. Ricardo Savoy ran for 239 yards and touchdowns of 27, 68 and 63 yards to spoil the first game in West’s new on-campus stadium. Savoy also caught a 78-yard touchdown pass from Taye Gatewood.
No. 1 North Little Rock, No. 2 Bryant and No. 9 Pulaski Academy were idle.
